The evaluation

Getting to know your child

Our three-part evaluation helps us understand your child’s strengths, interests, and needs.

  1. About 30 minutes · Virtual

    Parent Interview

A conversation about your child’s history, routines, strengths, and interests — and, most importantly, your concerns and what matters most to your family.

  2. About 60 minutes · In person

    In-Person Evaluation

We get to know your child through playful, purposeful activities, which may include standardized testing and clinical observations.

  3. About 30 minutes · Virtual or in person

    Parent Review & Planning

We review findings, celebrate your child’s strengths, and discuss recommendations. If therapy is recommended, we’ll create goals and a plan of care together.

Our goal is to create a welcoming, positive beginning to your child’s therapy experience.

Frequently asked questions

What ages do you work with?

Adventures in Progress works with children and teens ages 2 to 18. Not sure whether OT is the right fit for your child’s age or needs? We’re happy to talk it through.

Do I need a referral to get started?

We request a referral from your child’s pediatrician or another appropriate healthcare provider before an occupational therapy evaluation or treatment. This helps support coordinated care.

Not sure how to get a referral? We’re happy to guide you through it.

What happens during an occupational therapy evaluation?

The evaluation has three parts: a virtual parent interview (about 30 minutes), an in-person evaluation with your child (about 60 minutes), and a parent review and planning meeting (about 30 minutes, virtual or in person). Read more about each step.

What does a typical therapy session look like?

Learning through play is at the heart of what we do! Sessions are built around your child’s goals and interests and might include an obstacle course, sensory exploration, games, crafts, or practicing everyday routines.

It often looks like play, but every activity has a purpose. We also share practical strategies so skills can keep growing at home.

How often will my child have therapy?

The recommended frequency and duration of occupational therapy depend on your child’s individual needs and goals. Some children benefit from weekly sessions, while others may do well with less frequent visits and a home program. We’ll work together to develop a plan that supports your child’s progress and fits your family’s circumstances.

Does my child need a diagnosis to receive occupational therapy?

Not necessarily! Many children have challenges with everyday activities, coordination, or sensory processing without a formal diagnosis. An evaluation can help us understand your child’s strengths and needs and whether therapy may help.

Where are services provided?

Adventures in Progress serves families in Stone Oak and the North San Antonio area. Sessions may take place in community-based and other settings where children feel comfortable and ready to explore. Please contact us for current locations and availability.

Do you accept insurance?

Adventures in Progress is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. On request, we can provide a superbill you may submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We may explore insurance options as the practice grows.

Many families can use an HSA or FSA card for occupational therapy. Please check with your plan to confirm.

See current fees on the Services page.

Will I know the cost before we begin?

Yes. Because Adventures in Progress is a private-pay practice, you have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before your child’s evaluation or therapy services. We’ll provide it within the timeframes set by federal law, usually within 1 to 3 business days of scheduling, and you’re always welcome to ask for one before scheduling.

We’re excited to be part of your family’s journey!
